In the meantime, though, I've joined Twitter. It was kind of an accident, really. I just wanted to see what the site was all about, but I couldn't figure out how to browse without setting up an account, so I did. I'm not entirely convinced that people want to know about it every time I sneeze, but I think that this could have some pretty useful applications this summer. First of all, I figured out how to put a feed on my sidebar (see it???). So now when there are long silences from me, you can see what's been going on in mini-posts that are guaranteed never to exceed 140 characters in length.
Also, since I can "tweet" (or "twit") from my phone, I'll be able to give instant updates from races and trips. I'll be able to keep you posted from the road in France, let you know when I'm stranded in the middle of buttfuck New York, and have friends update on my progress in some of the longer races that I do. In the off-times I'm going to try to keep the play-by-play on bodily functions to a minimum, and instead "twit" about interesting articles I read, or cool tid-bits I pick up from books. I'm going to TRY to keep it an interesting way to share information that everyone would care about.
And speaking of interesting tid-bits from books... I'm reading The Cyclist's Training Bible (little more than The Triathlete's Training Bible or Going Long with a different picture on the front and less consideration for swimming and running. Friel has made a mint printing the same book under 3 different titles! It's not even the best book out there, fer goodness' sake...). In the "Special Considerations for Women" section, he had an interesting paragraph about "Contraception." It went like this:Contraceptives and Performance
A study at the University of Illinois showed that women who are on the pill may have an advantage in endurance sports such as cycling. During long endurance runs at a low intensity, women taking oral contraceptives showed an increase in growth hormone. They used significantly find [sic] carbohydrates and more fat for fuel than those women not taking the pill. This suggests that using oral contraceptives may improve a woman's capacity for burning fat, may allow her to get into shape faster, and may extend her endurance range in races. I am not aware of any other studies that have tested this finding, so the results should be taken with some reservation.
If you are not currently using an oral contraceptive, talk with your health-care provider before starting. Don't take the pill only for race-performance reasons.

I find this fascinating! I'm not on the pill, nor have I ever been. I have reasons for considering it (not for contraception, obviously, and not for performance enhancement, duh), but have always discarded the idea because of the oversimplified assumption that if testosterone makes you faster, then estrogen must make you slower. Boys = fast, girls = slow. So don't take extra girl hormones. I've heard that the pill can make you fat. Fat = slow.
Anyway, as the voices of experience, what have you ladies found?

pssst: hold down the Alt key and press 0176 to make a degrees° symbol :)
pssst: Eileen, or on a mac hit alt+0... But on a cell phone, no way to make a degree symbol. Oh well. You would make a good editor. Something to think about. :)
i took the pill in college and played soccer and was fast. i got off the pill for a long while and i didnt see any decrease in my fitness. i just recently got on the pill again - i didnt gain weight and my PMS is def not as severe but i also have absolutely NO drive to workout what so ever. i doubt its the pill, i think its just me, but there you have - my experiece with the little white tablet :)
I don't remember life before the pill, it has been that long. And before it, I absolutely hated physical activity. So maybe it is the pill. Ha! Who knew I was taking a performance enhancing drug?!
My aluminum frame bike is natural contraception...oh wait that's for dudes...sorry...but it does make me want to ride more than my old steel stead does that count. :)
On the pill I was very fit and did an Ironman. Off the pill I got knocked up and now have gained 35 lbs and can only waddle :)
Seriously I wasn't off the pill long enough to tell if there was any difference. However, the combo of the pill and IM training made me completely stop having a period which was nice. Sorry if that's TMI :)
Bobby- That's disgusting.
i can remember being on the pill and being so mentally fucked up from hormones i wanted to DIE. i will NEVER take the pill again. or ANY hormone for that matter. i don't have to use contraceptives anyway, dominic is fixed.
don't take the pill claire. if you think you're crazy now, the pill makes you totally and utterly psycho.
p.s now all you need is some facebook in your life.
Yeah Claire, Facebook!!
I love the pill...I take it months on end by skipping the "inactive" week and it makes being a female much nicer. I am sure those around me think that too. :) Don't think it gives me an edge though...still slow.
I take a blue pill every day and it doesn't make me faster but I do get 4 hours of...
Oh wait,
never mind.
stay clean.
Listen to Judi. She seems smart.
I stay away from the pill for the same reason I stay away from tanning beds: just seems too unnatural and too risky to mess with that shit. And anyone who's bothered by my once-monthly crankiness can shut the fuck up. I promise it's worse for me than for them.
Oh, also I have no need for contraception, oral or otherwise :-D
I was on a pill with very low hormone doses and I thought it was great. Little to no PMS, great complexion, and I knew exactly when I was going to start bleeding. Seriously, the modern pill does not have to make you psycho...just talk to your doctor for the latest info I would say. Being off the pill, I have way more physical symptoms of PMS which totally sucks. I would say it has made zero difference either way in terms of speed/performance. I guess it's tough to compare unless you're training at exactly the same level both on and off the pill.
